Track the Traffic Generated By Your Outbound Links

A outbound link is a link in you web site that goes to a external web page, in other words if someone clicks an outbound link in your web site, then the browser will go to another web site.

What you have to do in order to track the clicks going to an external web site when you don't have control under this external web site? First at all you need to have to have google analytics , and the you have to add a JavaScript code in your link in order to start tracked in the Google Analytics System.

Of course you need to have the you tracking code in your web page and your outbound link needs to have the onClick event:

<a href="http://www.externaldomain.com" onClick="javascript: pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/externaldomain.com');">

The onClick event will track the click before it redirects to the external website: externaldomain.com , which represents any web site your are linking to.

Once you have this JavaScript Code published in your web site and after some clicks in the links, Google Analytics will show the item "/outgoing/externaldomain.com" in the Top Content report.
